Paul Thomas Anderson (born June 26, 1970), also referred to as P. T. Anderson or PTA, is an American filmmaker. His films have been nominated for 25 Academy Awards, winning three for cast and crew.
An alumnus of the Sundance Institute, Anderson directed his first feature film, Hard Eight, in 1996. He achieved critical and commercial success with Boogie Nights (1997), set during the Golden Age of Porn in the 1970s and 1980s. His third film, Magnolia (1999), follows the interconnected lives of several characters over a day in the San Fernando Valley. His next film was Punch-Drunk Love (2002), starring Adam Sandler.
Anderson's fifth film, There Will Be Blood (2007), about an oil prospector during the Southern California oil boom, was released after a five-year absence and garnered wide acclaim. There Will Be Blood has been named by several critics as the best film of the 2000s. The Master (2012), about a war veteran who joins a religious movement, was released to critical acclaim. Inherent Vice (2014), based on Thomas Pynchon's novel, initially received polarized reviews but has since been seen favorably by critics. Junun (2015) is a documentary about the making of the album Junun in India. Anderson's most recent film, Phantom Thread (2017), is set in the London 1950s fashion world.
